How did boxing get started? A brief background of boxing
One of the most ancient and developed combat art forms in the history of mankind boxing has been practiced for hundreds of years. Its effectiveness at every level has improved as a result of regular testing in combat situations by professional athletes and their trainers.
When one examines the etymological roots of the terms “pugilism” and “prizefighting,” which are now commonly used in conjunction with boxing, they can be traced back to the boxing’s long time. Prizefighting is a fairly new term that dates back to the the 17th century in England and is a reference to the sporting competition and the currency-backed prize. In Latin the word ‘pugil’ was a reference to a boxer. The word originates from “pugnus,” which is it is the Latin word for fist. The Greek “pyx,” or “clenched fist”, is the place where the two words earlier come from. The bare knuckles sufficed to spar, but boxing gloves followed later.
